Prepping House Exterior for Tile InstallationOnce you determine the shower's size and location, mark out the back wall on the side of the house using a measuring tape, pencil, and four foot level to check for plumb and level. The back wall tile is set on a solid masonry surface, so Dean and Derek demo down to the house's tar paper moisture barrier by removing the shingles with a fine cut saw, crowbars and hammers (figures E and F).
For this installation, we opted to conceal the piping behind the wall of the house so that the decorative river rock, and not the piping, is the visual focus of this outdoor shower. Derek and Dean recommend bringing in a plumber to conceal the pipes behind the plywood (figure G and H).
- Once the pipes are in (figure I), reinstall the insulation and plywood, and then tar paper the plywood (figure J).
- Next, cover the back wall area with cement board. The cement board will act as a moisture barrier, add strength to the wall and, most importantly, provide a masonry surface for the tile and thinset to bond to.
- Cut the board to size using a grinder with a masonry or diamond blade.
- Don't forget to cut openings for the hardware.
- Secure the cement board to the side of the house with screws.
- Cover seams with mesh tape and a skim coat of thinset.
