  • Raising the Walls: The Framing Stage
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-105

In this first segment, viewers hear from the homebuilder regarding the framing stage and learn how important it is to protect the home from moisture and drafts by using a sill sealer. While the framers are setting the stage for the first floor, the homeowners are just as busy shopping for plumbing fixtures and tile. Viewers hear from the Obergs on their selections and tag along as they go shopping.

    Figure B
With the framing crew coming to the jobsite a lot is going to happen in a short amount of time. Within days, in fact, what was once only foundation blocks will begin to look like a skeleton of the Oberg home (figure A).

One of the main concerns for the Obergs during the construction of their new home was to control drafts and air infiltration into the home as much as possible. The first opportunity to do this was at the framing stage by using a sill sealer (figure B), which is a foam strip between the top row of block and the first layer of wood framing. The sill sealer serves its purpose by filling in any gaps or imperfections of the foundation block, which will help keep any type of air infiltration "out" of the house.
In the next segment, see how new technologies and personal adaptations to the house-plans cause problems on the jobsite.
