Paul locates the ceiling trusses to have something to attach the grid to. He snaps chalk lines to form a grid to line up the wood to. Using wire and lag screws, he fastens long maple grids to the ceiling.

Time: 20 hours over two days. Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 2 out of 5 on the Weekend Handyman difficulty scale.Materials: Wood ceiling kit Safety glasses 360 degree laser level Compound miter saw Stud finder Impulse nailer Fine tooth pole saw Needle nose pliers Cordless drill Ladder Tape measure Pencil 1x pine Lag screws Lag screw bit Nails Wire Workout weights Hanging the Grid 1. Locate and mark the ceiling joists so that you have something to attach the grid to. These are a standard 24 inches apart. 2. Mark them on either side of the room and snap the chalk lines (figure A). 3. Start building the grid from the center out. 4. To determine the length for the first long grid, measure the width of the ceiling (figure B), mark it at the center, then measure the length of the ceiling (figure C). 5. Cut the grid to size. Then, with a fine tooth pull saw, create a new notch so the grid will fit flush with the wall (figure D). 6. Measure and cut each grid one at a time. The room may not be square, so if you cut them all to the same length, you may come up short. 7. Position the grid into place right below the pine frame (figure E). 8. To support the grid, just toe nail it into the support (figure F). 9. Determine the spacing for the next grid by placing a short grid along the wall. Fasten with a few more nails.
10. The next long grid slides right into place (figure G). 11. When setting the grid pieces in place, make sure that your finish surfaces are flush and square to each other before you nail into place. 12. Fasten the lag screws into the ceiling trusses, about three per grid (figure H). This will prevent the grid from sagging.
13. Next, drill into the fin of the grid and cut the wire (figure I). Then, loop the wire through the eye hook and the fin, and loosely twist together (figure J). The wires will be adjusted and leveled later.
