Ceiling Repair and Stripping Crown Molding
1. Spray down the ceiling again (figure A).
2. Using a sanding sponge, work in a circular motion and smooth out the surface of the ceiling (figure B).
3. Using a utility knife, cut away any loose paper from the ceiling (figure C). It should just peel right off. Scrape off the rest with a 6" putty knife.
4. Make sure to only cut off paper that is loose, the goal is to just cut whats visibly loose and then patch it (figure D).
5. To secure the plaster to the lath, fasten as many screws with washers as you need to the ceiling (figure E).
6. Using a drywall compound and a putty knife, spread a thick layer over the screws (figure F), after it is dry put on another coat. Mud the other patches and repaired areas with the drywall compound.
7. Sand down any excess drywall compound and then prime.
8. The paint on the crown molding is removed with a paint stripping product.
9. Cut paper into strips that are long enough to cover about a two-foot section of crown molding.
10. Tape the paper strips to the wall, label side out, letting it hang down under the crown molding (figure G).
11. Use a rubber spatula to apply paint stripper over an entire area of crown molding (figure H). Make sure to wear gloves and goggles.
