Creating Paneled Walls The opening scene begins on the Green Room renovation. From "DIY to the Rescue" episode DTTR-707

A little trim molding and paint adds decorative interest.

The curtain rises on this project by tearing down walls to create an open space and fixing the faulty electrical work all done wiht the help of the theatre's renovation contractors The Beck Group. Then, Tampa Theatre volunteer Elinor Boushall gets confident with a nail gun and helps DIY to the Rescue Amy Devers install some decorative wall molding to create architectural panels.

Materials:

wall trim molding
mitre saw
wood glue
nail gun
finishing nails
pencil
level
measuring tape or ruler
paint
paint brush

Steps:

1. Start by cutting the wall molding to the desired size. Using a mitre saw, cut 4 pieces of wood into two equal sizes (this will make one design) making sure the ends are cut at a 45-degree angle.

2. Decide where you want the molding placed on the wall and measure out the designs to make sure each rectangle will be symmetric and evenly spaced. Then, using a pencil & a level, mark the walls to use as a guide when attaching the molding.

3. Starting with the bottom piece of wood, apply wood glue (Figure A), line up with marked guidelines, and press against the wall. Secure into place using a nail gun.

4. Next, move onto the side pieces (Figure B). Apply wood glue to the molding. Line up the mitred corners (Figure C) and follow the marked guidelines.

Attach to the wall by pressing, and secure with nails (Figures D & E). Repeat this step for the rest of the rectangle (Figure F).

5. Once all four pieces of molding have been attached to the wall, let the wood glue dry for about 2 hours.

6. Using a small paint brush, paint the molding your desired color (Figure G).

7. Finally, paint the wall space around the molding a different color (Figure H). This will ensure that the design stands out.
