  • Wall Mural
  • From "Ask DIY Decorating & Crafts"
    episode DADD-209

Q: (Sara in Atlanta, GA): I’d like to paint sports figures on the wall in my son's room. I’ve heard you can use an overhead projector with this project, but I don't know what to do from there. Can you help?

A: (from DIY painting expert Gary Lord): There are a few different ways to project your image on the wall, but the overhead projector is the best. Even if you don't have any artistic talent, painting a wall mural can be easy...and fun. The following are simple techniques for creating a wall mural.

    Materials:

    Latex paint
    Overhead projector
    Transparency w/artwork
    Artist brushes
    Pencil

    Steps:

    1. Base-paint the walls with a neutral, latex paint. You want your mural to pop out on the wall...not blend in with the base color.

    2. To make a silhouette, go to the library and get a book of clipart. Clipart is copyright free. Take the picture you have chosen to a copy shop and have them make a clear transparency of it.

    3. Place your clear transparency on the overhead projector. It will project the image on to the wall.

    4. Using a pencil, trace your image on the wall.

    5. To begin painting your image, take a small artist brush and trace the lines of your image. This will take two coats of paint, so don’t worry when your first coat does not cover all the way.

    6. To fill in the larger areas of your figure, use a larger brush.

    7. Once you have the majority of your figures painted, use a little of the base-paint color for touchups.

    8. Remember, keep your mural simple both in design and with color. Shading will add dimension, but you can create a terrific mural without it.

Tip: Before base-painting the walls, check for imperfections such as dents or gouges. They could become more apparent once you've painted the mural and they will be harder to repair. Fix them ahead of time with a little spackle or sand paper.
