Host Jessie Mack Burns is 13 hours in to the poolside patio project and she is well on her way to giving the lanai a new lease on life. The pergola structure has been added, but the work is not finished yet. New molding, lighting, plants and furniture need to be added.
Materials used in this episode:Pneumatic nail gun, nails Speed square 2x6 boards 2x4 boards Spacer Lag shield Brackets, washers, bolts Ratchet Measuring tape Additional Touches
- We needed to address the existing sliding glass doors. Redwood molding was used to trim the doors to tie in with the pergola (figure A). Tip: Its a good idea to have a helper when installing molding to ensure that its straight.
We then installed the new light fixtures (figure B). Safety Alert: Remember to turn off the power at the main box.
Carpet tiles were chosen for the flooring (figure C). These tiles come in different sizes and colors. They are perfect for indoors and covered outdoor patios. They are kid friendly and very easy to wash and remove.
Plants used in this episode:Mordern Fireglow Rose Yellow Trumpet Creeper Thompson Seedless Grape Black Knight Butterfly Bush Lavender Cranesbill English Spike Lavender Tuscan Blue Rosemary
PlantingNote: The plants used in this episode grow well in the northeast region. Make sure you use plants that do well in your own climate zone.
- Massive, tall containers to match the height of the pergola were used for planting (figure D). Fireglow roses were placed in pots, while a campsis was used to trail the pergola (figure E). Geraniums, seedless grapes, rosemary and lavender were also used to add special touches (figure F).
Tip: Consider adding fragrant vines to your pergola. Jasmine will twine its way through other vines. It smells fantastic and blooms almost year round. Honeysuckle is good too. It has a rich smell in the spring.
Finally, unique outdoor furniture was placed on the new lanai (figure G). We used furniture designed by Philippe Starck.
