In the first three segments of Blueprint for Home Building's "doors" episode, you've found out that doors provide weather protection and add style to your home. You also found out about the different materials used in front doors, as well as the different types of interior doors you can purchase. Finally, host Jeff Wilson will discuss garage doors in this final segment.Like all of the doors in and around your home, garage doors come in many designs. They can be sectioned, come with windows or raise automatically or manually. Garage doors can be made from either wood or steel -- and every variation you can think of.
- Custom wood garage doors (figure A), much like front doors, are perfect for homeowners looking to add custom design to their home. You can use any type of wood species available to go for the desired look.
Steel garage doors (figure B) are heavier, which is a concern if the door is to be lifted manually, but they do include an interior layer of insulation that increased its thermal properties. In fact, today's garage doors can be fabricated with 2"-thick insulation. They even have the ability to have insulated glass if they have glass top sections.
The added insulation in a steel garage door can aid in sealing a home's thermal envelope, thereby cutting down your energy bills. But if your garage is separate from your house, a wooden garage door may be sufficient.
Note: If you live in a coastal state where hurricanes pose a threat, you may be required to install a garage door that meets a minimum wind-load rating requirement. These wind-load ratings range from 110 to 165 mph, the velocity of hurricane winds. So if you're building your new home in an area with hurricane concerns, talk with your builder about meeting with a garage door specialist. That person can make sure that the garage door you choose meets with local or state requirements. In the next episode is all about the windows in your new home.
