The outside doors are in and the interior doors have been ordered. The types of interior doors going into the Oberg's home are known as pre-hung doors. Viewers go along to the factory as these doors are assembled and hear from Howard Wolff who describes the assembly of the door as it's being put together. The pre-hung doors are installed.- Pre-hung doors are hung on their frame, or jamb, at the factory (figure A).
- First, the hinges are attached to the door and to the hinge jamb. Brad and Lynn chose many different finishes for their hinges, including satin nickel and bright chrome. These details are sent to the assembly plant so that each door receives the correct hardware.
- For each door there is a hinge jamb and a strike jamb (figure B), which is the piece where the striker from the door knob will sit.
- The head jamb is nailed into the door next, and it's vital that it aligns with the side jambs. A bottom skid jamb is attached to protect the door when it's transported to the jobsite.
- The next step is to apply casing -- or trim -- to the door (figure C). The casing is attached to both sides of the door. Having the trim attached at the factory is less costly than doing it on-site.

Installing the DoorsSince the doors come with their casings, the installation of the doors is much easier for the carpenters. Before the pre-hung doors were made carpenters had to cut all the trim on-site and attach. The carpenter cuts blocks to space (figure D) the door up so when the ceramic is installed on the floor the door height is maintained properly for clearance when opening and closing. The door is set in the entry hole in order to roughly eye it to make sure it will align properly and that it's plumb.A 2" finish nail is driven through the casing (figure E), through the drywall and into the jack stud and into the full stud that support the entire opening. Then the door is checked with a level to make sure it fits perfectly in the frame. Once the door is exactly where it needs to be, the carpenter will use wooden shims to secure it into place. He'll usually shim in-between the hinges, on the top and the sides. This will lock the jambs into place securely.Sometimes the casing may not fit, and in this case the carpenter takes it apart and trims the casing until it fits. Each interior door is installed the same way. Finally, the painters take down the doors, paint them (figure F) and hang them back up.In the final segment the garage doors are installed.
