    • Brad and Lynn Oberg (the homeowners) did a walk through the house to make sure they had the proper dimensions for the window treatments. This is vital when planning and budgeting for your window treatments. The more precise you are before the selection process the better off you'll be in the long run. The couple, along with one of their daughters, went room to room, measuring (figure A) and discussing window-treatment ideas.

    • Lynn did homework she even set foot on the jobsite to determine the window treatments. "When I found something that I liked," she said, "as I cut things out of the magazine (figure B) I made sure that I made notes of who the manufacturer was or where I got the information." This made it easy for Lynn to go back and find the information. As mentioned in a previous episode, Lynn created collage boards with the magazine cuttings.

    • When choosing window treatments it's easy to get caught up with how they look from the inside, but it's also important to consider how they'll look from the outside. For example, the Brad's office in the basement has two doors (figure C) that will need window treatments in order for no one from the outside to see in. Brad and Lynn weren't in total agreement as to whether the doors needed window treatments or not, so they had to do some negotiating.

If you learn anything from watching another couple deal with the home-building process, it's the fact that you must be involved and you must visit the site often to stay ahead of any potential problems.

In the next episode, follow the Oberg family as they deal with door decisions and dilemmas.
