The newly installed upper window replaces an old attic vent.

Charlie and Julie Buchanan convert an attic into usable space with new window and hardwood floors. A reclaimed, relatively new vinyl window is a great deal at $50. Vinyl windows are great energy savers, and increase property values, saving the Buchanans more money in the long run.Materials: window saw power drill screws insulation foam shims Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection and follow proper safety precautions when working with power tools or pneumatic tools.
Installing WindowsTips: - Do not fill the gap between jamb and framing with too much foam too quickly. Otherwise, the jamb could bow and thereby bind the sash.
- When applying flashing, layer the material so that any water running down the wall is directed out: Seams should never face up.
Steps:- Measure your window and cut a hole in the wall giving plenty of clearance room for squaring up (figure A).
- Lift the wall piece out carefully.
- Build up your window frame with 2x4's (figure B).
- Set your window into place and carefully check to ensure that it's plumb.
- Shim your window to square and plumb, and secure your window into the frame with screws using a power drill with screwdriver attachment.
- Seal and finish your house inside and out.
