  • Powering the House: Let There Be Light
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-111

    Figure A
In this final segment of "Powering the House," test their new lighting technology. For example, Brad and Lynn Oberg will be able to group their lights into zones (figure A) and preset dimmers for different moods or events. The options are endless and with the push of a button they can change the lighting in the entire house.

The Oberg lighting system (from Lutron Electronics -- see Resources, below, for more information) is complex and multi-faceted. This particular system takes some planning so Phil Scheetz of Lutron (figure B -- Scheetz on left) demonstrated to Brad some of the unique features.

One example is that you can have a button on your vehicle's visor that when pressed would light a pathway of lighting into the garage and on into the kitchen. The master control allows multiple lights throughout the house to be controlled from one area. There's one in the garage that controls the pathway mentioned above.

Another master control is located beside the homeowner's bed that will allow Brad or Lynn to turn on or off any light in that particular zone. It also allows the couple to monitor any lights that are on in the house.

After Brad and Scheetz determine which lighting zones are controlled by what switches, Scheetz meets with the electrician who will be installing the system.

One of the best features of this system is the fact that it can be tied into the home's security system (figure C). When the security system trips, the interior lights in the home come on and the exterior lights flash, which allows the police or neighbors to know what's going on and draw attention to the house.

Lighting in the media room was a major consideration for the Oberg family. "In the media room (figure D) we actually had two different considerations," Brad said. "One was when we're in entertainment mode and we want bright lights in here, we have some decorative wall sconces, and when we're watching television we don't want light to hit the front of the TV so we have lights in the ceiling that light down and will actually illuminate the floor." Both are on dimmer circuits. This had to be worked out with both the lighting planner and the electrician.

Powering the Oberg home has gone well, and next week increase your home IQ by finding out how to make your house safe and comfortable with insulation and ventilation. See technologies that help create an almost airtight home.
