  • Lighting It Up: State-of-the-Art Lighting System
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-121

    Figure A
The electricians have installed the lightings in the Oberg home, and now it's time for our homeowners (Brad and Lynn Oberg) to control all multiple lights from various parts of the house with their state-of-the-art lighting system, which is tied into the security system.

Home automation is a new area in house construction, which basically means a house should be smart enough to do some things on its own. For example, if a smoke detector goes off, wouldn't it be a good idea if it sent a signal that "automatically" turned the lights in the house on (figure A)? Only one answer possible, yes! In fact, it should also turn off the furnace so smoke isn't blown into other parts of the house.

Fortunately, the Oberg home is equipped with a system that will accomplish this task and more. Brad and Lynn decided to have a lighting control system from Lutron (see "Lighting for Oberg Home" listing under Resources, below, for more details on this system). One thing this system will do is control the lights from a master control panel (figure B) once it's programmed. This will allow Brad and Lynn to control multiple lights from different locations in their home.

Note: Our homeowners can even have a button on their car visor that will control the lights to the pathway out front in through the garage into the kitchen.

Another great feature is that this package can be tied into the security system in the house. When the burglar alarm is tripped the system can be programmed to flash the exterior lights to alert the neighbors of a break-in.

In our next episode of Home IQ, columns on the front porch, brick for the drive and walkways and elegant decks come together to give the Oberg's home extra appeal as we cover the decorative touches to this unique custom-built home.
