    The faux finish "rug"
Faux Finish: Creating a Faux Rug With Paint

DIY host Shannon Kaye follows the orders of DIY's online voters and gives the Blog Cabin a burst of color including a faux rug, created with paint, on one of the bedroom floors. A summary of the basic steps, and the tools and materials used, are provided below.

    Tools:

    measuring tape
    level
    paint roller
    paint brushes
    paint tray

    Materials:

    paint (base, and top)
    paint extender
    steel wool pads

    Steps:

    1. Select your paints keeping your color scheme and the surfaces in mind.

    • Note: The surface you will paint on will determine the paint sheen for your project.

    2. Clean your surface (figure A), then measure off the area for your "rug" and place painters tape to keep paints from mixing (figure B).

    • Note: To keep paint lines crisp, we used a utility knife and a level to cut straight lines through the painter’s tape (figure C).

    3. With your borders laid out, pour your base paint into a paint tray (figure D) and load the roller with your base paint (figure E).

    • Note: Remove any excess paint from the roller onto the ribbed tray.

    4. Begin rolling base paint in your designated area (figure F), continuing until the area is completely painted.

    5. Touch up any necessary areas, and let the base coat dry.

    6. For the next layer of our rug, measure for placement (figure G), put down painters tape to mark the boundaries and paint within the original borders (figure H).
