    A window-box planter is ideal for growing kitchen herbs like basil and dill.
    In this installment of DIY's Blog Cabin, Paul Ryan from DIY’s Kitchen Renovations stops by to help the Blog Cabin team with the creation of a country kitchen.

    In this project, Paul helps Amy Devers make a custom herb window box. Following is a summary of the basic steps for building a window box like the one Paul created for the cabin.

    Tools:

    power drill
    nail gun
    table saw

    Materials:

    plastic planter-insert
    lumber
    wood glue
    galvanized nails

    Steps:

    • Measure your plastic insert (figure A) and cut your lumber to accommodate the size of the insert.

    • Place pieces together and adhere using wood glue (figure B) and galvanized nails at the adjoining edges (figure C).

      Note: Galvanized nails have been specially treated to endure outdoor weather conditions.

    • Once the box is constructed, measure for placement (figure D).

    • Use a cordless drill to secure the wooden box in position with wood screws (figure E).

    • Place the plastic insert inside the wooden box, place plants, water and enjoy.
