  • Blog Cabin: Fireplace, Hearth and Mantel
  • When it's time to install the fireplace in DIY's Blog Cabin, Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns of DIY's Rock Solid offer some expertise on mortar-mixing, stone placement and the finer points of selecting a perfect keystone.

While Derek and Dean proceed with on the stone fireplace, Chris and Simon treat the exterior logs with a solution of bleach and water.

The bleach solution helps kill of any mold and bacteria present in the pine logs before the stain and clear-coat is applied.

Simon ponders whether the cabin will ever have a finished roof.

    The Carved Mantel

Amy Devers pays a visit to local woodworker Billy Reynolds who is designing the carved wood mantel to go above the fireplace.

The carving is an oak leaf design that uses actual leaves as templates for the individual leaf carvings.

Amy tries her hand at woodcarving and using a powered wood gouge to add texture to the mantel piece. The textured surface is a visual reference to the hand-hewn logs used for the cabin walls. Amy finds that the noise and vibration of the electric gouge takes some of the "Zen" out of the "Zen of woodworking."

Once the carved mantel is complete, it is the final element that (after some last-minute adjustments) is secured to the fireplace.
