  • Blog Cabin: Cabin Roof Construction
  • Despite delays, the Blog Cabin team does successfully raise the roof. And while they're waiting, there's time to create a unique crowning accessory.

Seeing double? Chris and Simon Hodshon are log cabin experts, our general contractors for Blog Cabin and identical twins.
In this installment of DIY's Blog Cabin, "roof" is the operative word. Through their online voting, DIY bloggers expressed a strong preference for a tin roof — a traditional cabin style and also a choice that's popular partly for the pleasing sound that rain makes when it hits the metal roof surface.

The problem? With construction already underway, and the log structure already in place, the metal panels for the roof are late being delivered. While they wait on delivery, general contractors and log-cabin experts Chris and Simon Hodshon explain to host Amy Devers all the elements that go into the modern day version of the classic tin roof. There are more than you might think.

What Do You Do When Your Tin Roof is Missing?

Despite the missing metal, work can get underway on installing the portions of the roof materials that have arrived, so wood decking, felt paper, insulation and lathing go on before the metal panels have even been delivered.

And because of the delay, there's even time for a short diversion into old-time blacksmithing (with a modern twist) as a metal weathervane, with a traditional rooster design, is created as the crowning adornment for the metal roof.

    Decisions, Decisions.
    Shake Shingle, Asphalt or Tin?

More than 4.2 million votes were cast in DIY's online Blog Cabin poll, selecting the style of the cabin and helping determine a number of its final attributes.

300,000 votes were cast online in the selection of the roof type. The choices were wood shingle (figure A), metal roof (figure B) or the more modern asphalt shingle. The metal roof was the runaway winner.
