In this episode of DIY 's Kitchen Renovations, host Paul Ryan introduces the homeowners (Marshall and Jeanine) and reveals the plan (after conferring with a designer Diana Berndt) for a contemporary kitchen renovation.

    • To achieve a soft, contemporary plan, Berndt first suggested new countertops in order to center the sink under the kitchen window.

    • Update the appliances, and integrate a stovetop into the kitchen island. This will marry the island with a cook-top and seating area.

    • Eliminate a wall in order to capture the space and enlarge the kitchen, which will allow space for the island and eating area.

    • The estimated cost for all the products and materials is less than $30,000.

Note: Whenever you are planning a major renovation such as this one, be sure to check with local authorities to see if a building permit is required.

    Materials and Tools:

Safety gear (eye protection, gloves and mask)
    Appliance dolly
    Plastic (for doorways)
    Drill
    Wrench
    Pry bar
    Hammer
    Reciprocating saw
    Roofing shovel (for ceramic tile)
    Wallpaper scoring tool
    Stripping spray
    Optional: steamer

    1. First, you need to clean out the kitchen and cabinets.

    2. Remove appliances with an appliance dolly (figure A), which can be rented for approximately $15 a day.

    3. Turn off both gas lines -- one at the appliance and one at the supply origin (figure B).

Tip: Hire a plumber if you have any doubts about your electrical-and-wiring knowledge.

In the next segment, Ryan and the homeowners will start tearing out the old cabinets and countertop, and they'll remove the ceramic tile flooring.
