Christy Crafton, projects editor for Country Sampler Decorating Ideas magazine, has a kitchen filled with antique advertising collectibles. A wall border made of food labels fits the theme in a charming and inexpensive way. The soffit seemed a natural place for the food-label border (figure A). To bring the color down, a border was also applied along the back of the sink on the backsplash wall. The border is edged in blue-and-white painted checks to match blue-gingham-bordered flour sacks hung at the window (figure B). To begin the border, choose labels that are similar in height. Trim those that are close in height, and paste them in a horizontal row on a piece of paper. Determine the right width for your border and have a copy center reduce or enlarge the border sections as necessary. Use wallpaper paste or decoupage medium to attach the border to the wall. Wallpaper paste will allow you to remove the border more easily in the future; decoupage medium will seal the border to the surface more permanently.
