  • Tubular Skylight: Basement Installation, Part 2
  • From "Weekend Handyman"
    episode WKH-402

Paul finishes the basement skylight by installing a light kit, so the tube will give off light even at night. He feeds the lighting wires through a conduit, and then secures the tube to the basement ceiling.

Without natural light, the basement was downright gloomy.

With sunshine now in the space, it's a whole new atmosphere!

    Basement Skylight Installation

    1. Drop the top half of the tubing through the roof (figure A). Make sure the tubes are taped and securely screwed together.

    2. Begin installing the light kit by drilling a hole through the bottom of the tube and then feed electrical wires through the hole (figure B). Mount the conduit elbow to the light kit bracket and tighten (figure C).

    3. Wrap wires and feed through the conduit.

    4. For the final tube, put together the sheet metal to connect the bottom tube with the top tube and then tape with aluminum tape to seal the final seams (figure D). Roll seam with a brayer roller.
