With the cost of granite coming down, it's a material that's becoming more mainstream even for starter homes. For his home makeover, Mike chooses sapphire blue granite to replace his dated laminate countertops and modernizes the sink and faucet as well.

Following are some tips on granite countertops, as presented in this Sweat Equity project, as well as a list of tools and materials used.

    Materials and tools:

    utility knife
    hammer

    Granite Countertop Tips:

    • Most granite countertops must be professionally installed.

    • Granite is resistant to stains, scratches and heat and, most importantly, holds it's value well.

    • If you are looking to save money on expensive items like granite countertops, don't be married to a specific color. Granite can be cheaper when it's contractor grade or if it's a common color that's readily available.

    • Small samples don't always look the same in large slab form so be sure to check out the slabs.

    • To remove old countertops prior to installing new granite countertops, score the silicone along the back of the existing countertops. Tap the underside to loosen the countertop, then carefully pry it up.
