At the end of day two and 20 hours, a kitchen that hadn't been updated in years is now transformed into a modern beauty -- and practical as well!

    Day Two

Installing the Countertop and Tiles on Wall

    1. Lay the counter on top of the cabinet and screw the top in place using screws from underneath.

Tip:Try to slide the counter in evenly (figure A) from both ends so it doesn't bind. If there is a little gap by the wall, don't worry as the tile will cover it.

Note: Do not use silicone as the wood counter has to be able to expand and contract.

    2. Replace the window casing.

    3. To adhere the tiles to the wall, use a latex modified portand based thin set (figure B). You can find it at almost any home center or tile store. Thin set stays workable for approximately two hours.

    4. Cut the tiles with a grinder equipped with a "continuous rim" diamond blade (figure C). Also, use the grinder to cut the holes for the outlets as well as any other special cuts.

Tip: Have someone stand by with a vacuum for getting up the dust.

    5. Adhere the tiles.

    Installing the Faucet.

    1. Put Teflon tape around the threads (figure D) of the P-trap to keep it from freezing.

    2. Assemble the P-trap to the tail piece.

    3. Tighten the metal fittings with a wrench and the plastic fittings should only be hand tightened.

    4. Attach the dishwasher wasteline (figure E).

    5. Tighten up the water supply lines. The rest of the plumbing connections are standard.

    6. Install the faucet and handles.

Tip: Another way to give your kitchen a new look is to put in an island (figure F). By putting a nice butcher block top on the island, it can really enhance the look of your kitchen.

Expert Tip: With all the butcher block around you may be tempted to start cutting all over the place, but use a cutting board and your wood counters will look great for years.
