Wood putty - To install the trim, start at the top and work your way down. When installing the chair rail around the top of the bead board, it is best to work from the window's edge out to the end for the most accurate fit. Miter the chair rail trim at 22-1/2 degree angles where the walls meet.
- At the outside corners cut simple 45-degree angles (figure A) and nail them in place. Repeat the process around the top of the bead board. The chair rail hides your nails, so you will have fewer touch ups.
- At the top of the seat, install quarter round trim. Measure the lengths and cut them on a compound miter saw, remembering to return the ends. Since the trim has been prepainted, touch up the fresh cut ends before setting them in place.
- As with all trim, nail it on the fat side when nailing it in place (figure B).
- The decorative molding is placed along the seat edge. Glue it and then nail it along the edge (figure C). Cut the molding at 45 degrees on the outside edges and 22-1/2 degrees on the inside corners.
- The last pieces to install are the corner moldings to hide where the edges meet (figure D).
- Countersink any nails heads left exposed, and putty the nail holes and any spaces that aren't perfectly aligned.
- Caulk the edges on all of the trim and smooth the caulk out with your finger( figure E).
Expert Tip: Always use a paintable latex caulk and apply it with a continuous motion. You can wet your finger to smooth off the excess (figure E). When you are done with that, take a small brush and apply the paint and come back with a large brush feather out the edges. - Seat cushions and decorative pillows to around the banquette complete the look of your new banquette (figure F).
