Prep Work, Build Base, Redirect Air Vent, Relocate Electrical Outlets and Attach Top to Base = 3 hours
Build Frame for Bench Seating, Build Facings for Door Openings and Install Top = 4 hours
Install the Doors and Bead Board = 4 hours
Install Chair Rail, Quarter Round and Decorative Half Round Trims and Paint Trim = 4 hours
Total time spent = 15 hours over 2-1/2 days

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the hardest, this project is a 3.

Approximately $700 was spent on supplies; a contractor would charge approximately $1,500.

    Materials:

    Power nailer (rented)
    Utility knife
    Prybar
    Primer, good paint and brushes
    Compound miter saw
    A/C diverter
    Chair rail wood trim
    Quarter round trim
    Decorative half round molding
    Birch plywood
    Circular saw
    Miter saw
    2 x 4's
    Hammer
    Chisel
    Nail gun
    Premade floor air vent
    Duct tape
    Silicone
    Electric drill and bits
    Wood screws
    2 x 2's
    Jigsaw
    Cabinet decorative end panels
    Construction adhesive
    Painters tape
Door panels with circular cutouts precut for hidden hinges
    Hidden hinges for each door
    Bead board
    Caulk and caulking gun
    Wood putty

    1. To install the trim, start at the top and work your way down. When installing the chair rail around the top of the bead board, it is best to work from the window's edge out to the end for the most accurate fit. Miter the chair rail trim at 22-1/2 degree angles where the walls meet.

    2. At the outside corners cut simple 45-degree angles (figure A) and nail them in place. Repeat the process around the top of the bead board. The chair rail hides your nails, so you will have fewer touch ups.

    3. At the top of the seat, install quarter round trim. Measure the lengths and cut them on a compound miter saw, remembering to return the ends. Since the trim has been prepainted, touch up the fresh cut ends before setting them in place.

    4. As with all trim, nail it on the fat side when nailing it in place (figure B).

    5. The decorative molding is placed along the seat edge. Glue it and then nail it along the edge (figure C). Cut the molding at 45 degrees on the outside edges and 22-1/2 degrees on the inside corners.

    6. The last pieces to install are the corner moldings to hide where the edges meet (figure D).

    7. Countersink any nails heads left exposed, and putty the nail holes and any spaces that aren't perfectly aligned.

    8. Caulk the edges on all of the trim and smooth the caulk out with your finger( figure E).

Expert Tip: Always use a paintable latex caulk and apply it with a continuous motion. You can wet your finger to smooth off the excess (figure E). When you are done with that, take a small brush and apply the paint and come back with a large brush feather out the edges.

    9. Seat cushions and decorative pillows to around the banquette complete the look of your new banquette (figure F).
