Prep Work, Remove Sink and Stove, Remove Backsplash and Sand Counters = 4 hours Applying Mortar and Setting Tile on Countertops = 5 hours Finish Setting Tile and Setting the Backsplash = 5 hours Applying Grout and Adding New Sink = 4 hours Total Time on Project = 18 hours over 2-1/2 days On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the hardest, this project rates a 4. We spent $1,000 on supplies for this project. If you hired a professional tile setter, you would pay approximately $2,500. Materials: Level Clamp Palm sander 50-grit sandpaper Wet saw (rented) Circular saw Reciprocating saw Tiles Spacers 2" shims Utility knife Screw gun Latex modified thin-set adhesive Grout Square-notched trowel Hard rubber float Caulk - Grout the backsplash first. Fill the joints with grout using a hard rubber float. Pack the joints and then remove the excess grout by going back over the tiles at a 45-degree angle (figure A).
- Pack the grout along the top of the jagged tiles with the end of a trowel (figure B) and then come back across the top packing it in and smoothing it out.
- Once you have grouted the backsplash, it is time to grout the countertops. Remove the spacers that are laying flat between the corners of the tiles. A utility knife works great for this (figure C).
Expert Tip: Grout is very caustic, so it is a good idea to wear heavy rubber gloves whenever you are working with grout for any length of time. - When everything is grouted, dress the joints by pushing the grout in the tiles in a circular motion using a damp sponge (figure D). Wipe across the tiles in a diagonal line to keep from pulling the grout out of the joints. Keep rinsing the sponge and wiping diagonally across the tile with clean water.
- On the show a new sink was installed. To reinstall a sink, just hook the water lines back up. Connect the sink drain (figure E), and reinstall the garbage disposal and drain for the disposal. Turn the water back on.
- Put caulk around the sink where the sink meets the new tile (figure F).
- Place the stove back in place.
