Tinning the Ceiling Now that the furring strips are in place, providing a good base for the tin ceiling, it's on to the next phase of the project: adding the tin. Safety note: It's a good idea to have an extra set of hands and to wear eye protection for this part of the project. - Cover the entire ceiling surface with plywood using 1-1/2" wood screws. Using plywood as a buffer will make it easier to attach the tin panels to the ceiling.
- Predrill the tin panels every few inches to make nail holes. It's a good idea to look for inconspicuous spots to insert the nails.
- Begin securing the tin panels to the plywood with 1-1/4" conehead nails.
- Some cutting of the tin panels will be necessary to ensure a proper fit (figure A). Make sure to have heavy gloves and sharp tin snips.
- Starting in the center of the room, overlap the tin panels about 1/2" before securing in place.
- To install the cornice, predrill for the nail holes (figure B).
- Position cornice in place and secure with conehead nails (figure C). To even out an uneven wall, run a bead of adhesive along the bottom of the cornice.
- Cut cornice to a 45-degree angle for corner pieces (figure D). Again, use heavy gloves and sharp tin snips.
