    Tips:

    • A thin coil of rope can help you align and set thin laminates. First apply contact cement to both surfaces. When the cement has cured, lay a rope across the surface in a zigzag pattern. Lay the laminate onto the rope and carefully align the edges. Finally, remove the rope while smoothing the laminate into place.

    • When ordering countertops, be sure that your cabinet depth is the industry-standard: 24" deep. If your cabinets are deeper, double-check your measurements and alert your supplier when ordering.

    • Plastic laminate countertop manufacturers have it down to a science. There's very little difference in quality among brands, so go with the company that offers the color and finish you like best.

    • If you need more muscle out of a spring clamp, slide another clamp inside the first to really put the pressure on.

    • Teflon tape applied inside the threaded cap of an adhesive bottle will prevent the cap from getting stuck.

    • Penetrating oil and a razor blade will remove sticker and tape residue from glass. Allow the oil to soak in place for a few minutes, and the adhesive will come off easily.
