This home's spacious kitchen had great stainless-steel appliances and lots of white ceramic tile -- but the dark pine cabinetry threatened to overwhelm the room. So the first order of business was to lighten the cabinets. Nancy Golden removed the doors of one set of cabinets (see below); she painted the doors of the others a kiwi green with a darker green glaze. Cabinet Makeover - Remove the hardware and either clean it or buy replacements. (Tip: If you're replacing your old cabinet handles, be sure to buy replacements with the same machined dimensions as the originals. That way you won't have to fill in the screw holes and drill new ones.)
- Remove any buildup, using a scraper to remove any gunk. Then sand the entire surface to prepare it so it will accept the primer.
- Apply the primer and let dry at least 24 hours.
- Apply the paint (two coats will give it a nice saturated finish).
- Apply the glaze finish, using a dry-brush technique.
