Beverly DeJulio, host of HGTV's HomeWise With Beverly DeJulio, gives a young couple's new kitchen finishing touches that add personality without a lot of time or expense. Adding a wooden panel to the front of the dishwasher and glass-front doors over the sink gives the room a custom look. A wooden valance camouflages an unattractive light fixture over the sink, and shiny brass cabinet doorknobs add flair. New wood panels added to the front of the dishwasher give it a custom look. A wooden panel, available from the cabinet manufacturer, is cut to size with a circular saw and sanded smooth. The laminate panels on the front of the dishwasher are used as templates for the new customized panels. A wooden valance over the sink is added to camouflage an unattractive light fixture. Beverly chose from several valance options, including a plain wood valance and a scalloped-edge valance, both available from the cabinet manufacturer. She decided on a more creative option by making a valance with a piece of millwork backed with fabric. The fabric, added to the back of the spindled millwork valance, adds color and hides the light fixture. To do this project yourself, use fusible hem tape to finish the edges of the fabric, then staple the fabric in place on the back of the millwork. Hang the valance with L brackets, making sure to drill pilot holes before driving the screws so the wood won't split. The solid wooden cabinet doors above the sink are replaced with glass-front doors that show off pretty dishes and stemware. The new doors came with recessed hidden hinges that Beverly replaced with hinges from the original cabinet so they would match the rest of the cabinetry. The easiest change of all was to replace tarnished knobs with shiny new brass ones. Make the switch easier by using new hardware with the same machined dimensions as the old hardware.
