- First clean the windows, getting rid of any dirt or debris along the edges. Make sure that the glass in place firmly in the window. If there are any areas of bare wood, clean them up by sanding and priming.
- When the primer is dry, you can apply the glazing compound. Knead the compound for a minute, then roll it between your palms to create a bead of compound -- as you would modeling clay.
- Position the bead of compound along the edge of the glass, and flatten it using a putty knife (figure A). Try to do this in one quick motion rather than going back and forth over the compound.
- Use the edge of the putty knife to remove the excess.
Windows are expensive. A little maintenance can help keep them in good shape.
