If you need to do any filling on the inside around the window, in addition to the width measurements, you need to take measurements for length.
Trim for the window can be purchased at a home improvement store. It is just 1x stock that is ripped down to fit into the gaps around the window and then cut down to size (figure A).
Prime and paint the wood. Use a high quality primer any time you do this. It has more pigment in it than less expensive primer, so you may be able to get away with one coat of paint on the trim.
It doesn't matter where you start installing the trim, just make sure it fits snugly before you nail or glue it into the place.
To install the trim, you can put a bead of sealant down the back and set them in place, or, you can hammer them in with finish nails or use a finish nailer (figure B). They just have to hold themselves in place.
Caulk the seams around the trim (figure C). The type of caulk you use depends on the material you use for the trim. Latex caulk was used on the show -- it is easy to work with and allows you to have a nice finished look to the window. Also, it is paintable and you can make it match most any color trim. Be sure and fill the gaps thoroughly to ensure good weatherproofing.
