- Dry fit the window. It is important to set the window into place because even though your measurements are exact, there is always a little here or there that will need to be filled. Have at least two people help you set the window into place (figure A). One can hold the window in place and the other can go around and check to see where the problems are.
- Check the seal and make sure there is no moisture damage. If there is damage, you need to repair it before you begin the window installation.
- To make sure the window is weather resistant, give it a thorough cleaning to make sure to get rid of any dirt. As you clean the window, check for any warping.
- You need to put metal flashing (which is just like tape) on the top corners to the window (figure B). Place it far enough on the outside so that you won't see it from the interior of the window. The flashing can be found at most home improvement stores, and comes in various widths. Make sure and get the correct size for your window.
- Use spray adhesive around the surface of the rough opening of the window and then apply flashing around the opening. The adhesive will help the flashing stick and will give you a better barrier. You cannot put too much flashing on. Also, overlap pieces from the top down. For extra protection on the corners, you can go across them diagonally with the flashing (figure C).
- Use the spray adhesive again to spray on top of the flashing you install right before you set the window in place.
- Put the garden window into place. Tack it up with a few nails and then check for level and plumb.
