The project: A toy box The Timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.) One brother is an engineer and the other is an architect. Red Team Nathan Dirnberger Laura Giese Dave Dwars Blue Team Simon Dirnberger Shane Woollard Ryan Woollard Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red Team designs a triangular toy box that slides apart to reveal a desk and a storage area.
- Their first step is selecting and cutting several large sheets of 3/4-inch plywood. Using the jigsaw, the team cuts a triangle for the base and two bottom sides (figure A).
- Two more triangles are cut for the desk section (figure B) and two pieces for the desk sides. The other sliding section will offer additional storage space.
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team decides on an artistic design that involves a series of shapes - a cube, triangle and a cylinder -- that combine to make one toy box.
- After using a calculator to figure out the proper angles for their triangle, they measure, draw and cut four 30-inch plywood triangles (figure C).
- Next, Plexiglas for the cube is measured, scored with a utility knife and snapped off for a straight line (figure D).
