Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The team cuts the first of the three "beach" pieces from 3/4" plywood. The biggest piece is shaped like a wedge 4' long at the top and widening towards the bottom. Next, a curvy edge is cut at the bottom of this piece to simulate waves, before being painted.
- Two additional wedge-shaped pieces, each with the top edge at a length of 23" so that it fits on the side sections of the rim (figure A). The pieces are painted to resemble sand and surf.
- Next, the team cuts out palm leaves from various shades of green fabric and secures the pieces over the palm leaf frames.
- Then, the team begins building a dock from two 2 x 4s that will serve as support for the boardwalk. These are placed against the side of the main frame.
- Four 4 x 4s approximately 2' long are divided and set on each side of the 2 x 4 supports to serve as dock posts.
- The team cuts several 1 x 6s at alternating longer and shorter lengths and nails them to the 2 x 4 supports (figure B).
- Red yarn is draped between the two docks to simulate rope.
- A step is created from two 1 x 6s cut to 4' long and nailed together. The step is secured to the frame opposite the dock.
Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The Blue Team cuts several short pieces of 2 x 4s and nails them between the cross braces on the bow and stern of the boat.
- An octagonal piece of wood is cut for the crow's nest (figure C). Railing pieces are then added to the side of the crow's nest (figure D).
- The team cuts four 54" 1 x 6s, then nails them around the base of the boat as molding.
- Treated 1 x 4s are nailed between the stern and bow.
