Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The team nails trim to front and back of shelf supports (figure A), then uses hot glue to attach three mirrors to the top of the bottom shelf.
- Next, six 15" pieces of molding with a 45-degree taper on each end are nailed to the side shelf supports.
- A plywood door is cut to fit between top and middle shelves. The top of the door is 2' long and the bottom 34.5" long. Once cut, the door is attached to the cupboard with screws and a piano hinge.
- A chain is attached from the top shelf to the top of the door, the screws a handle to the top of the door.
- A light fixture is secured inside the light box and the box is suspended over the top shelf with two 16" 1 x 4s.
- Two scraps from the legs are nailed to the back of the shelves as middle supports.
- The team attaches decorative wood designs to the top of the front legs and the front of the door, then secures a mirror to the inside of the door as its finishing touch (figure B)
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - Two large metal triangle hinges are attached to the each side of the cabinet.
- Next, decorative metal leaf-shaped handles are added to each door front.
- The team cuts and attaches molding to fit over the area where the crown pieces meet the top corner of the cabinet (figure C).
- Two scrap door pieces are attached to the inside top and left corners of the front of the cabinet with a nail gun (figure D).
- Arched doors are secured to the front of the cabinet using screws.
- Roller catches are added to the door and cabinet before the cabinet is stained.
Score Summary: Judging Overview: The score was extremely close but the Blue Team's castle theme impressed the judges enough to earn them the highest score. Red Team: 223 Blue Team: 226
