The Blue Team's desk design features lots of storage and a comfortable work area. Accent lighting and decorative touches complement its classic look.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • To add a shelf, they first screw metal brackets to the side panels. After cutting a piece of plywood to size, they screw the board to the brackets and add accent lighting (figure A).

    • Fabric is measured and cut to cover the back panel of the main desk, more molding is nailed to the front and decorative hangers are screwed into the sides.

    • One last piece of plywood is cut for the backing of the top section of the main desk. Finally, the team covers the sheet with foam and red fabric (figure B) and secures it to the desk.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • A curving pattern like that of the desk top is cut out of plywood and secured to the top of the shelf. Next, the shelf is attached to the desk with wood screws.

    • A corkboard is nailed behind the door of the lower left cabinet and the desktop is nailed to the cabinets (figure C).

    • Veneer is added to the edges of the desk with a hot iron (figure D), a pre-made coat rack is screwed to the side of the shelf and all that's left is to stain the desktop.

    Score Summary:

The judges praised the Blue Team's craftsmanship and the functionality of their desk. They liked its curves and the alterations made to the pre-made cabinets. But, it was the creativity of the Red Team's design that earned the highest scores. The judges thought the paint, the shelf lighting and choice of materials all contributed to a lighthearted, colorful - and victorious - project.
