Two teams of radio contest winners from Minnesota battle it out to see who can design and build the best desk in just eight hours. The teams: Radio station employees and contest winners. The project: A desk. The timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.) Some of these competitors have been involved with carpentry and home improvement for years. And for some, their first real taste of sawdust will happen inside the walls of our warehouse. Let's meet the teams! Red Team Bob Cashin Ali Hoglund Brian Schumann Blue TeamAndy Skoriuchow Ron Skoby Sue Thompson Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red team's concept includes both a standard desk with a workspace and top plus a smaller desk to allow a child to work alongside a parent.
- The team begins by selecting two pre-made cabinets -- one with a door and one with just drawers -- and cutting birch plywood for the countertop (figure A). The countertop is made to leave a one-inch overhang.
- They decide to paint their drawer fronts various colors and also paint four 30-inch pre-made table legs for the kid's desk (figure B).
- A smaller piece of birch plywood is measured and cut for the kid's desk countertop.
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team's desk design features a sleek, curvy design with lots of shelves and a writing board for messages.
- The work starts by cutting a sheet of 1/2-inch plywood and then carving a free-form shape on one side (figure C).
- Two pre-made cabinets are selected for the base of their desk and the left side of the smaller cabinet is removed (figure D).
- The team begins its shelves by cutting plywood to size and nailing the pieces together.
