Two teams from a radio station are pitted against each other to see who can build the best room divider in just eight hours. The teams: Employees from a Minnesota radio station The project: A room divider The timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.) Don't expect a lot of static from these folks; they're used to working together. But, we do expect a lot of power tools and imagination. Let's meet the teams! Red Team Bard Knudson Juli Jay Chris Kalis Blue Team Kevin McLaughlin Dawn Dykstra Kristina Jonason Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red Team envisions a wood base supporting a curved, sloping top made of a variety of materials including copper, tin, metal mesh and tinted plastic.
- They begin by cutting four 1 x 6s -- two long and two short -- and then make 1/4-inch dado cuts along the outside edges of each piece (figure A).
- After practicing a little bit on a scrap of plywood, they use the router to finish the edges of the 1 x 6s. Then, the edges are lightly sanded.
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team designs a multi-functional, kid-friendly room divider that features a basketball hoop, a Velcro dartboard and a chalkboard.
- The first step is ripping two sheets of one-inch plywood with the table saw ( figure B). The sheets are sanded smooth and chalkboard paint is applied to one sheet.
- Next, two 2 x 4s are cut to 49 inches in length. One-inch dado cuts are added to the middle of the pieces so that the plywood sheets can slide into the grooves.
- After the plywood edges have been sanded down, a black and white checkerboard square is drawn onto the top left portion of the paneling (figure C).
