Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The shelf piece is fitted into the middle joints of the left and middle vertical supports. These vertical supports are then fitted into the left and middle joints of the top and bottom pieces.
- Once the main frame is assembled (figure A), it is glued and nailed.
- Next, the team makes the coat rack more stable and secure by adding 18-inch 2 x 4s to the bottom of the frame and begins enclosing the main frame with panels cut from 1/4-inch plywood.
- Decorative molding is cut and nailed along the outer edges of the main frame.
Ed's tip: One of the most important things to keep mind when building a coat rack is balance. You don't want it to fall over when you hang a few heavy coats. Using a lap joint in the base of your coat rack is one way to make sure it stays upright. Here's how to make a lap joint:
- Begin with 2 x 4 "framing member".
- Notch your 2 x 4 halfway through, then notch a second 2 x 4 in the same manner.
- Force the two members together at the notch to create a flat cross shape.
- Secure with fasteners and you have a very strong joint!
Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
- The Blue Team cuts a rectangular piece of 3/4-inch plywood to serve as their bench top. The piece is deeper than the box. This creates an overhang that allows the lid to be opened more easily (figure B).
- Sharp edges can sometimes hurt, so the front corners of the storage box are rounded off using a jigsaw and then sanded smooth (figure C).
