    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • With lots of creative touches planned, the Red Team gets an early start on its decorative painting including butterfly coat hangers (figure A). A small pre-made coat rack is also painted with each team member's name .

    • The dowel rod frame is painted red on one side and white on the other.

    • Work on the main frame of their project begins by cutting sheets of one-inch plywood with a table saw. These will serve as vertical supports.

    • Plywood is also used for the top and bottom pieces and joints are added to the sides to support a shelf (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • Pieces of 3/4-inch plywood are cut for the front and sides of the storage box. The bottom edges of the side and front panels are beveled so that the bottom piece -- also cut from a sheet of plywood -- will fit flush.

    • Next, the front, side and bottom panels of the storage box are attached to the bottom and front of the sea monster -shaped plywood sheet. The structure is first glued and then secured with nails.

    • Finally, they trim four pre-made furniture legs to three-inch stubs and attach them to the bottom of the box (figure C).
