The Red Team's toy bos is designed to be a built-in corner unit. Its two sides swing open to reveal a desk and storage area. The interactive concept also features a writing surface.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • A locking mechanism is added to the desk door and handles attached to the pivoting sections.

    • After a few adjustments to ensure the structure is balanced, the team re-secures the sections and all that's left is a few finishing touches.

    • They sand the edges of the toy box with a finishing sander and add a coat of varnish (figure A).

    • Finally, the team makes a curving writing surface on one corner of the project by applying blackboard spray paint (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team hurries to finish their project, but they're slowed because the triangle portion of the toy box does not fit into the cube portion exactly as they would like. They cut another plywood top for the cube and settle for a less than perfect fit.

    • Chalkboard paint is sprayed onto the triangle (figure C) and then each segment receives casters. These are attached with screws and allow the entire structure to be moved easily (figure D).

    Score summary:

The judges liked the creativity of the Blue Team's design and thought the writing surfaces and casters to be particularly useful features. The Red Team was praised for their innovative concept . The clean lines, natural finish and versatility of their toy box earned higher scores from all three judges and the victory.
