Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The door to the desk section is attached with hinges and the two metal rods on which the sections will pivot are cut to size (approximately 32 inches in length).
- Then, the Red Team fits the two top pieces onto the base by sliding the metal rods through the corner triangle pieces (figure A).
- To help the sections slide more smoothly, Plexiglas circles are cut with a band saw and then the edges sanded smooth. The slick plastic circles will be placed onto the metal rods much like washers and will lessen the friction when the sections are moved.
Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The team attaches the plywood circles to 2 x 2s to make the frame of the cylinder (figure B). The cylinder is then wrapped in sheet metal (figure C).
- The Plexiglas is attached to the cube frame. They pre-drill holes into the plastic to prevent the screws from splintering the material.
- After some thinking, the Blue Team decides to cover the sheet metal on the cylinder with fabric. With its hard surface and sharp edges, the metal was not the most kid-friendly of materials.
