Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - After finishing the sides and adding a back door of 2 x 10s attached with hinges, the Red Team focuses on the final touches - the fit and finish - of their Army truck playhouse. They cut Plexiglas for the windshield (figure A and frame it with 1 x 6s), paint the steering wheel black and cut PVC pipe to make front and back bumpers.
- Additional support is added by the attachment of 31-inch 4 x 4s -- with the appearance of a roll bar -- to the back of the truck on each side.
- When the bumpers and wheels have been attached, the truck gets a custom camouflage painting (figure B). Finally, touch lights are used for headlights and this playhouse is ready to roll!
Ed's tip: When building a ladder for any kind of play structure, be sure to check your local guidelines. NPPS Guidelines say you should always have nine to 12 inches of space between the rungs of the ladder for use by school-aged children. Use a good wood like redwood that won't rot quickly. Using finish washers and treated screws during construction will also help your project last. And adding silicone to any exposed metal tips will help little hands from getting cut or scratched.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)
- With time running out, the Blue Team hurries to add a roof to their playhouse. They cut three 2 x 4s (79 inches, 48 inches and 27 inches). The beams are then attached to the top, the longest positioned the furthest to the left.
- When the door is screwed to the back of the playhouse with hinges, the teams slides more plywood onto the roof beams, then nails it securely into place. Next. two 48-inch sheets of green corrugated roofing are attached to the plywood (figure C).
- The Blue Team quickly constructs a ladder for the inside shelf (figure D) by cutting 2 x 4s for the rungs and sides The pieces are assembled using lag bolts and two touch lights are hung to the inside roof for some interior lighting.
Score summary:
The judges enjoyed the unique and creative design of the Red Team and loved all the movable parts and weatherproof construction. They also appreciated the versatility and safety considerations that the Blue Team brought to their project. But, when all was said and done, creativity won over two of the three judges and they gave the Red Team the win.
