    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The truck's front frame is also cut from 2 x 4s and includes two 49-incches pieces for the top and bottom and two 34-1/2-inch pieces for the sides. Two 27-inch pieces will be used for the windshield section. All the pieces are laid out and then nailed into place.

    • To make a steering wheel, the Red Team uses a jigsaw to cut a circle from plywood (figure A). The shape is then routed and sanded smooth.

    • Box frames will form the base of each chair in the truck. They begin by cutting 2 x 4s -- two 14-inch pieces, two 11-inch pieces and two 29-inch angled pieces -- to make two frames for each chair. After screwing these pieces together, the team cuts and nails four 16-inch 1 x 6s to the frames. The 1x6's will be the seat and back of the chairs (figure B).

    • Circles are drawn onto plywood - 24-inches in diameter - and cut out with a band saw for the wheels of the truck.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team adds two more 4 x 4 posts to the middle of the two front sides and attaches them with lag bolts. The posts are then trimmed with a reciprocating saw (figure C). The three corner pieces are cut to 86 inches in height and the two middle posts to 78 inches.

    • After ripping two pieces of plywood paneling with the table saw, they attach it to the sides of the playhouse. The back and front are left exposed.

    • Next, the team uses a jigsaw to round off the front corner of their structure and then considers what to do with the back of the playhouse.

    • They decided to create a removable door and begin assembling a frame. After cutting 1 x 4s to a variety of lengths, L-brackets are used to attach the lumber.

    • Just before lunch, various shapes -- a moon, sun and trees (figure D) -- are drawn for the windows on the two side panels.
