The Red Team's game table was fun and colorful, from playing- card table legs and dice chairs to a blue and white chessboard.

The Blue Team's more traditional design included a removable chessboard and lots of storage in pre-made cabinets.

    • Trim is added to the table and the card legs are attached to the tabletops with lag bolts.

    • Finally, the team concentrates on getting their project painted. They choose red for the table trim, black and white dots for the dice chairs, black for the game table edges and the lazy Susan (figure A).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • To make bumpers for the tabletops, four 2 x 4s are measured and cut, wrapped in blue foam (figure B) and covered in green felt.

    • Decorative molding is nailed to the sides of the table and the bumpers are screwed into the outer rim of the tabletop from below. This conceals the hardware and keeps the felt surface smooth and free of edges.

    • All that remains is a little trim on the inside edges and some new handles on the cabinet drawers (figure C). This game table is ready for action!

Score summary: The judges thought the Red Team's game table was original and innovative and praised them for their use of color and materials. In the end, however, the solid construction and finished look of the Blue Team's project overcame their opposition's creative advantage and the Blue Team swept to the victory.
