Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The headboard is made from three pieces of cherry. One piece is rounded off with the jigsaw and then all the pieces are attached to the bedposts.
- Bedposts and bedrails are sanded smooth. Next, cherry 1 x 8s are cut and nailed into squares. The squares are nailed to the tops of the bedposts (figure A).
- The bedposts and bed frame are assembled. Pegs are inserted into the holes at the end of each rail to hold them in place (figure B).
Ed's tip: A band saw is like a heavy-duty jigsaw that is often used for cutting curves in wood. "Band" refers to the strap that moves around two wheels and serves as the cutting implement. Band saws have a cutting guide to hold the wood in place as well as a tension guide to help make perfect cuts.
Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
- After ripping plywood paneling for the headboard and footboard (figure C), the paneling is slid into the grooved frame (figure D). Rubber mallets are used to gently but securely knock the paneling into place.
- The headboard and footboard are sanded smooth.
