    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The footboard begins with cherry 1 x 6s cut to size with a radial saw. The boards are then routed with a table saw to make grooves to hold the decorative tile. Braces will attach the footboard to the bedposts.

    • More cherry is also used for the side rails and supports. The side rails are assembled without nails. Instead, holes are drilled and dowel rods inserted and glued (figure A).

    • The ends of the side rails are then trimmed to fit in the notches in the bedposts. The tree branch design is drawn on a piece of birch, cut with a jigsaw and sanded smooth.

Ed's tip: There are several things to keep in mind when you're using clamps. First, be sure to put glue on each side of the wood and smear the glue around the surface to be attached when pressing the wood together. Second, wipe of any excess. There are also several different kinds of clamps including:

  • Spring-loaded clamps
  • Quick grip clamps
  • C-clamp s (holds up to 6 inches)
  • Bar clamps (for big projects)

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • While the bedposts are sanded down, the Blue Team rips more cherry for the footboard and headboard.

    • After notching all the pieces, the frame is assembled with glue and nails (figure B) and 4 x 4s are added to the inside of the posts for support.

    • Next, 1 x 8s are cut and assembled into a square for the tops of the bedposts and beveled using a router.
