Some folks sleep in their beds for eight hours every night. That's the same amount of time our teams of skilled woodworkers have to make their beds. And that doesn't mean pulling up the covers and fluffing the pillows. That means building headboards and footboards from scratch! While each project is guaranteed to be well-built, it's creativity in design and construction that will score points with the judges in the end.

    The teams: Professional woodworkers

    The project: Headboard and footboard

    The timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.)

These guys really know their stuff. The Red Team's members are artists from Wilson, Kansas with a commitment to old-time craftsmanship. The Blue Team is composed of professional woodworkers associated with a woodworking web site. Let's meet the teams!

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team envisions a footboard with tile accents, while the headboard will boast a copper tree design.

    • They begin by trimming the ends of cherry boards to remove any factory markings.

    • After trying several layouts with the decorative tile, they decide to use a patter n of five horizontal tiles spaced four inches apart (figure A).

    • Cherry 1 x 5s are cut, sanded, glued and then nailed together to make bedposts (figure B).

    • Additional cherry 1 x 5s are cut, sanded and attached to the bedposts.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team chooses a classical design featuring the beauty of wood paneling. Their first step is cutting pieces of cherry for the bedposts and side rails (figure C).

    • While the side rails are attached with screws and washers, they use a biscuit joiner to make notches in the bedposts.

    • The notches are filled with glue, biscuits inserted (figure D) and the posts are nailed together.
