After being cautioned about dangling ropes and other child safety hazards, both teams make modifications before moving on. Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The team paints its turrets blue and yellow, the side braces green and red. The flagpoles are painted using a burnishing technique: they're first painted burgundy and then gold.
- After flags (figure A) and links of yellow chain are attached, the firemen paint handprints and footprints on the structure. All they need to do is add the sand and this castle is ready for play!
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - Holes for windows are cut and then pieces of steel grating are used as covers. Birch 1 x 3s will frame and cover the edges of the grating.
- Fabrics for the flags are chosen, cut and then stapled to 48-inch dowels. Holes are drilled into the front posts and the dowels inserted.
- A permeable lining is spread into the sandbox, stapled onto the frame and trimmed to fit. Finally, more lining is cut, rolled onto a dowel and secured to the frame to serve as a removable cover. Time to dump in the sand (figure B).
Score summary:
Today's project proved that there's more than one way to build the same thing. With two castles from which to choose, the judges liked the permeable fabric lining and cover for the Blue Team's sandbox, but the playfulness and construction of the Red Team won high scores in creativity and the firemen ultimately hoisted their banner in victory. Red Team Score Sheets: Judge 1 Total Points: 82 Judge 2 Total Points: 85 Judge 3 Total Points: 98 Blue Team Score Sheets: Judge 1 Total Points: 77 Judge 2 Total Points: 82 Judge 3 Total Points: 90
