    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • After sanding the edges of their side braces, pressure-treated 2 x 6s are cut for the bottom benches. The benches are attached with the nail gun and then screwed in for extra support.

    • Cedar 1 x 4s are cut, nailed and trimmed to create a rounded drawbridge door. Hinges are screwed in, the door is secured to the bottom frame and a rope and pulley system attached (figure A).

Ed's tip: If you don't want to leave a sandbox in the yard, consider making one that's portable. Be sure to:

    • Use heavy-duty wood like 4 x 4s for the frame.
    • Make sure water -- not the sand -- can drain through the holes or cracks in the base.
    • Get locking casters so the sandbox won't move while the child is in it.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Composite decking is cut with a table saw, nailed to the floor joists and then trimmed with a circular saw.

    • After spray painting their drawbridge door brown and adding hinges (figure B), the castle facade is secured to the frame and posts. 2 x 4s are nailed to the frame for support.
