    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The firemen notch 4 x 4 posts with a jigsaw, fit them over each corner and screw the posts to the frame.

    • The tops of the towers are cut from birch plywood and the turrets from redwood (figure A). The pieces are attached with a nail gun.

    • The team chooses decorative rope molding for their flagpoles and secures them to the turrets by drilling holes and twisting the molding into place. Fabrics are selected and cut into flags.

Ed's tip: When constructing a sandbox, be careful that there aren't any sharp metallic or wooden edges left exposed. And make sure the box isn't completely enclosed so that parents can watch kids playing. Finally, use the right kind of sand: choose play sand. It's made specifically for sand boxes and comes in a variety of colors.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • Two triangle benches are created from 2 x 6s cut and attached at opposite ends of the square frame.

    • The policemen begin their castle facade with 1/2-inch oak plywood cut into five squares. Then, a jigsaw is used to cut notches into each square. Windows are cut out and the edges sanded down with a router. A two-foot opening for a drawbridge is marked, cut and sanded smooth.

    • Black and white paint is mixed to make gray and then, a sponge used to create a brick-like pattern on the castle facade (figure B).
